The Ethical Dimension of African Community as a Model for Environmental Ethics in Northern Tanzania by Gerald M. Kimario, AJ

Abstract

This is a dissertation book arguing for the ethical dimension of the African community as a credible model for environmental ethics in Northern Tanzania. The Northern Zone is experiencing environmental ethical challenges leading to unhealthy ecological systems. There have been various attempts by anthropologists, religious leaders, and economists to address the environmental crisis in this Region without meaningful success. This apparent failure to mitigate the environmental crisis in that Region is mainly attributed to the shaky foundations of current environmental ethical models. These shaky foundations are due to the following reasons, namely: first, the limited scope of their investigations as they only focus on causes and consequences of the environmental challenges and second, their arguments are most often dominated by Western models. The attention to issues leading to shaking foundations of environmental ethics is not fully exhausted.

As regards the methodology, the dissertation book applies a social analysis approach that involves three main stages: see, judge, and act. Certainly, the book has threefold purposes. Firstly, making a critical analysis of the environment in Northern Tanzania and at the same time presenting the conceptual understanding of environmental ethics including the reasons for its shaky foundations. Secondly, based on the teaching of the Church on environmental ethics, the ethical dimension community model rooted in the theocentric principle interrogates the current trends in environmental ethics. Finally, proposing the ethical dimension of the African community towards a credible model of an environmental ethical community. In light of the experiences, the dissertation book analyses the responses from the individuals and the community. It is precisely in this context that the dissertation book argues for the environmental ethical dimension of the African community as a credible model.
